Cy Williams:
Still Remembered
By Phillies Fans

He is all but forgotten, but some Philadelphia Phillies baseball fans keep the memory of Cy Williams very much alive on the internet.
-
History tells us that Cy Williams, Babe Ruth and Rogers Hornsby are the only major leaguers born before 1900 to hit more than 200 career home runs.
-
Williams, an architecture student at Notre Dame, participated on the college's track team and played football for the Fighting Irish along side teammate Knute Rockne.  But, Notre Dame’s baseball coach persuaded Williams to give up football to concentrate on a baseball career.
-
Drafted by the Chicago Cubs, Williams eventually became a member of the Phillies. In his 19-year career, he led the National League in home runs four times and, is the Phillies leader with the most grand slam home runs hit in extra innings.  In his first 14 years in MLB, he played for a different manager each year, including Tinker, Evers and Chance.  He played until he was 42 years of age, and for seven years, he was one of the ten oldest players in MLB.
-
It was also noted he passed up the opportunity to represent the U.S. Track Team in the 1912 Olympics in favor of concentrating on baseball.
Cy Williams is a history lesson in itself.
