The first unofficial baseball All Star game was played in 1911, 22 years before the first official All Star game was played at Comiskey Park, Chicago. Stars from both leagues played a benefit game that year as a fund-raiser for the widow of pitcher Addie Joss, who died unexpectedly.
Joss had attended spring training with Cleveland before the start of the 1911 season. He collapsed on the field from heat prostration in an exhibition game and died 10 days later of tuberculosis meningitis.
